Planning for students
to learn from home can be tricky. What will engage students? How do we provide
them with variety and some practical investigations? The team at WASP (Woodside
Australian Science Project) have pondered just that…
Announcing the release
of At Home Learning Plans for Years 4-10 Earth and Space Science. These are now
freely available on the WASP website.
24/4/20 Update - we have also updated our STEM projects so that they can be conducted at home. Now in a handy interactive PDF format so students can record their work and submit one easy to read file!.
The resources that are now available are:
The resources that are now available are:
- Year 4 – Weathering and Erosion: students explore weathering, erosion, soils, floods, drought, the impact of human activity on the Earth’ surface and evidence of landscape changes. They conduct research and experiments and create posters.
- Year 5 – Solar System: students explore the planets, orbits, space travel, life on Earth (and what makes that possible), as well as how our ideas about our solar system have changed over time. They conduct research and experiments and create music
- Year 6 – Geological Changes: students explore the structure of the Earth, volcanoes, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts and how we prepare for these natural disasters. They conduct research and experiments and create posters.
- Year 7 – Oil and Water: students explore resources, renewable V non-renewable, the behaviour of water and oil & gas. They conduct research and experiments and create presentations.
- Year 8 – Rocks and Minerals: students think about why rocks are important and explore all parts of the rock cycle and minerals. They conduct research and experiments and create replica rocks and collections.
- Year 9 – Plate Tectonics: students explore the development of the theory of plate tectonics, the evidence for continental movement, earthquakes, volcanoes, planetary differentiation and resource extraction. They conduct research and experiments and produce models.
- Year 10 – Global Systems: students explore the spheres and cycles, the Greenhouse Effect and climate change and it’s impacts. They conduct research and experiments.
We invite teachers to take these resources and
make them their own. You might like to add regular class chats about content,
an instructional video lesson once per week and/or work for submission on a
fortnightly basis. We hope that the freely available resources through WASP
help to engage your students and inspire them to #exploreearth
